VALUE CYCLING
Biosphere Rule #1: Minimize the types of materials used in products. Focus on materials that are life-friendly and economically recyclable.

Our next biosphere rule is value cycling. Once we have our pallet of carefully selected parsimonious materials we then need to cycle those materials through repeated versions of our products. This is not a new idea. Sixteenth century Sir Francis Bacon, a father of the Scientific Revolution said, “That all things are changed and that nothing really perishes and that the sum of matter remains is exactly the same is sufficiently certain.”  This understanding was codified as the Law of the Conservation of Matter. Nothing in our universe really perishes. Matter is just transformed over and over again.  "Nothing ever really disappears" is a concept that’s important if we are going to make our manufacturing production processes sustainable. This fundamental understanding, however, has not been incorporated into the way we have built our business and industrial world.
