BIOSPHERE RULE #3 - POWER AUTONOMY (5)

This is the FIFTH of five videos on BIOSPHERE RULE #3 - POWER AUTONOMY.

POWER AUTONOMY Biosphere Rule #3: Maximize the power autonomy of products and processes so they can function on renewable energy.

Biosphere Rule #3 - Power Autonomy - is about optimizing the energy independence of products and systems so that they can run on available free flows of renewable energy. Power autonomy is gained by maximizing the efficiency of energy generation and use in products and production processes. By doing so you minimize energy demand, allowing products to operate longer on any given amount of energy, extending the autonomy of the system. Lower power demand also reduces the size of both renewable energy generation and storage needs, opening the possibility that energy capture, generation, storage can be integrated into products and systems themselves.

Biosphere Rule #2: Minimize the types of materials used in products.

Focus on materials that are life-friendly and economically recyclable. Our next biosphere rule is value cycling. Once we have our pallet of carefully selected parsimonious materials we then need to cycle those materials through repeated versions of our products. This is not a new idea. Sixteenth century Sir Francis Bacon, a father of the Scientific Revolution said, “That all things are changed and that nothing really perishes and that the sum of matter remains is exactly the same is sufficiently...

MATERIAL PARSIMONY
Biosphere Rule #1: Minimize the types of materials used in products. Focus on materials that are life-friendly and economically recyclable.

The first Biosphere Rule is Materials Parsimony and it is, quite simply, about simplification. It is minimizing the types of materials used in products. I want to be clear that I’m not talking about minimizing the amounts of materials. Minimizing the amounts of materials is a different sustainability strategy, alternatively called eco-efficiency, dematerialization or...
